For each of the following feedback mechanisms, indicate whether it is an example if a negative or a positive feedback loop. Expl

ain your reasoning.
a. A snowball rolling down a hill becomes larger and larger, making it roll faster and become larger still.
b. Iron is absorbed from digested foodstuffs through receptor-mediated pinocytosis in the small intestine. When iron concentrations in the blood rise above the set point, excess iron accumulates in the cells of the small intestine. This excess iron itself functions to suppress the futher active absorption.
c. Determined to earn an A in Human Physiology, you decide to seek help from a tutor. The tutor is helpful, but very expensive. In order to pay the tutor, you must start working nights, Working reduces your study time, and your grades fall in the course. Thus, you spend more time with the tutor, meaning you have to earn more money. As a result if working more, you decide to spend even more time with the tutor.
d. A decrease in set-point concentration for thyroid hormones results in a greater inhibitory signal from the thyroid gland (effector).
e. During the stage of a nerve impulse, sodium channels in the cell membrane are opened These opened channels allow sodium ions to diffuse into the cell, which in turn creates a slight change in voltage across the cell membrane. In response to this change in voltage, more sodium channels in the cell membrane are opened. This allows more sodium to diffuse into the cell and causes and even greater change in voltage across the membrane.

Answer:

A . This is a positive feedback mechanism in which it is observed that the snowball increases in size with the bearing, thus the movement reinforces the size of the ball.

B .This is a negative feedback mechanism in which over time it is evident that iron levels in the body drop.

C . This is a negative feedback mechanism in which if more work is done at night the score will be decreased

D .This is also a negative feedback mechanism because when thyroid hormone levels drop, the hormone continues to decrease on its own.

E .This is a positive feedback mechanism in which sodium is observed as it passes through the cell membrane, making the process more active and causing more sodium to enter the cell.

Why do you think mapping the bedbug genome may help scientists control pests?
zhannawk [14.2K]

Explanation:

When mapping the genome, it shows where other pests are more likely to appear. This means more control over the rate of pest growth, and they can stop reproduction from increasing.

Commercial logging destroyed __________ percent of old-growth forests.
Nitella [24]

Commercial logging destroyed 45 percent of old-growth forests.

Logging, or commercial logging, involves cutting trees for sale as timber or pulp. The timber is used to build homes, furniture, etc. and the pulp is used to make paper and paper products. Logging is generally categorized into three categories:  selective, clear-cutting and strip logging.

  • Selective logging is selective because loggers choose only wood that is highly valued, such as mahogany.
  • Clear-cutting is not selective. Loggers are interested in all types of wood and therefore cut all of the trees down, thus clearing the forest, hence the name- clear-cutting.
  • Strip logging involves the clear-cutting of a relatively thin strip of forest that parallels a river (goes along the river) along a slope.  A gallery forest (bordering the river) is left intact, but a strip is cut immediately upslope and the desirable timber is removed by a road that is also designed to parallel the river. Following this, another strip is cut several years later immediately upslope to the first strip and the road.

22. What type of reaction is Cellular Respiration?<br> (exerganic or endergonic)
FrozenT [24]

Answer:

Cellular Respiration is an exergonic reaction.

Explanation:

An exergonic reaction is a type of reaction where energy is released to the surroundings. This reaction happens spontaneously and does not require energy to proceed. These reactions form more stable bonds by breaking less stable chemical bonds and release energy. Catabolic reactions are exergonic reactions. Here energy is released by the breaking down of larger molecules into smaller ones. Cellular respiration is an example of an exergonic (catabolic) reaction. It is the conversion of glucose in the presence of oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. The energy released is used for cell activities. Another example is the breaking down of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen in the cells.

An endergonic reaction is a type of reaction where energy is absorbed from the surroundings. These reactions form less stable bonds by breaking more stable chemical bonds using energy. Anabolic reactions are endergonic, in which small molecules combine to form larger ones. An example of an anabolic reaction is photosynthesis, where carbon dioxide and water are used to produce glucose and oxygen by using energy from sunlight. Another example is the reaction of glycerol with fatty acids to make lipids.
