Pelagic zone is what we call one of the possible subdivisions of the seas and oceans. This classification occurs horizontally and is located below the tide level. The pelagic environment is located below the level of the tides, with about 200 meters of depth, however, this environment reaches much more significant depths, being verified a depth of at least 4000 meters. This entire space was divided according to its length and characteristics. One of these divisions is called the epipelagic zone which is 200 meters deep and is the only area considered part of the photic zone and has high nutrient productivity.

It is believed that there is 100 times more pressure on organisms at levels just below the epipelagic zone than on shallow reefs.
