The Senate is one of two chambers of Congress. The other is the House of Representatives. Each of the 50 states of the United States has two senators. Every two years, one-third of the senators are up for election, and an election period thus lasts six years for a senator. Originally, senators were appointed by the legislative assemblies of the states, but since 1913 the Constitution has prescribed direct elections.  

In addition to ordinary legislative work, the Senate is responsible for signing or rejecting international treaties signed by the United States with other nations, and is responsible for approving ministers, ambassadors and judges nominated by the President of the United States.
