The term is often confused with fanaticism, extremism, traditionalism, sectarianism and conservatism. A supporter of fundamentalism is called fundamentalist.  

However, the concept of fundamentalism has increasingly come to mean literal and dogmatic, often in a derogatory sense. In addition, in the term Islamic fundamentalism, which is often used synonymously with Islamism, the term has a political significance, namely that religious dogmas are widely applied to a society.
