the work barking is a verb but it is used as a adjective here. If it just said the dog, you wouldn't know that it was barking or what it was doing.

I've never read this but Im just guess out of nowhere.
It seems as though the thing, or should I say the person, that is hurting Cole (where its intentional or not) may be Kyle as he had a reaction to that second question Beckett asked instead of the first, that too the 'glowing red eyes' which seems like a strong feeling. Not sure if its right, but as I said, Im just saying what I think.
