Sir Walter Raleigh was sent to several expeditions to North America and Guiana by Queen Elizabeth I. He led the first expeditions to the North-eastern coast of the America in one of the advances to colonize the actual United States and Canada.

Also, Raleigh traveled twice to Guiana, or Guyana, where he fought against the Spaniards and local indigenous people. He disputed several posseions with Spain in Trinidad and across the Orinoco River. Raleigh even reached the northernmost part of Colombia.

Latter, during the reign of James VI and I, Raleigh was imprisoned and latter executed.
