Adherents to the movement were to reply "I know nothing" when asked about its specifics by outsiders, thus providing the group with its common name.
The 1868 Carolina constitution is more concerned of the majority. It allows the vote of the population for a governor. This makes participation more democratic because it gives the opportunity to everyone and disregards one's race or illiteracy as a barrier to voting. It also allowed more social rights to everyone.
