A expresses dna that has been derived from another species. 2. dna that has been altered to contain genes, or portions of genes,
OlgaM077 [116]
1. A transgenic organism expresses DNA that has been derived from another species. These organisms have altered genomes and are generated in the laboratory for the purposes of research, for example, the "knock-out" mice are tansgenic mice with a particular gene of interest disabled.
2. Recombinant DNA is the DNA that has been altered to contain genes, or portions of genes, from different organisms. The DNA molecules are formed in the lab using recombination methods to bring together genetic material from multiple sources and therefore creating sequences that are not found in the genome.
3. Restriction enzymes are found naturally in bacteria and they cut DNA at specific nucleotide sequences. These enzymes are also called restriction endonucleases, they cleave DNA into fragments at or near specific recognition sites called restriction sites. They are found in bacteria and archaea and they serve to provide a defense mechanism against invading viruses.
4. Biotechnology is the use or alteration of organisms, cells, or biological molecules to produce food, drugs, or other goods. Living systems and organisms are used to make or develop products. Biotechnology enhances cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and product for the purposes of improving life and health.
5. Polymerase chain reaction is a technique that is used to quickly synthesize billions of copiies of a specific segment of DNA.  It is a quick and a very efficient way to generate many copies of DNA.  The process is applicable when there are small quantities of DNA to analyze. The events of PCR involves; separation of DNA strands, addition of primers, use of DNA polymerase to produce second strand of DNA.
6. In the process known as transformation, bacteria take up pieces of DNA from the surroundings. Bacterial transformation results from the uptake of naked DNA (DNA without associated cells or proteins). Transformation may also occur naturally in some species of bacteria.

The lactose (lac) operon in E. coli is an example of a repressed gene when lactose is not available in a cell. In 3-5 sentences
irakobra [83]

Answer:

Please find the detailed explanation of this statement below

Explanation:

Firstly, a repressed gene is a gene whose expression has been inhibited or repressed. The lac operon in E.coli bacteria is a regulatory unit containing structural genes, a single promoter and operator regions. The promoter is the region where the transcription enzyme (RNA polymerase) binds to in order to transcribe the genes in the lac operon. The structural genes in the lac operon can only be expressed in the presence of lactose sugar.

However, in the absence of lactose, LAC REPRESSOR, which is a transcription factor (protein), prevents the binding of RNA polymerase to the PROMOTER region by binding to the OPERATOR region of the lac operon. This inhibits the expression of the lactose genes in the operon.

Note that, the structural genes in the lac operon (lacZ, lacY, lacA) code for proteins that help break down lactose sugar for energy in the E.coli bacteria. Therefore, a bacteria cell with a repressed lac operon will be unable to degrade lactose sugar.

Which best explains how binary fission contributes to the genetic continuity of a population? A Binary fission maintains genetic
kozerog [31]

Answer:

B Binary fission maintains genetic continuity because the daughter cells contain the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell.

Explanation:

Genetic continuity ensures that genetic information is passed from one generation to another in correct way so that the resultant progeny has the complete set of genes required for survival. For example, at the end of mitosis, daughter cells should have the same number of chromosomes as parent cell.

Binary fission is a method of reproduction in some organisms like bacteria. It is an asexual mode of reproduction in which the parent cell splits into daughter cells without the process of fusion with another cell. It still maintains genetic continuity because the daughter cells are identical to the parent cell and thus have same number of chromosomes and type of genes.
