So to understand the Japanese politics, when in power, the new leaders moved to abolish the old orders and to put more strength and power into their own hands. To cut power  from the Daimyo, the new leaders cut land from them in 1871. The lords were then named governors of these territories under their control. These territories were then called prefectures. They were no longer owned by Daimyos.
