He was a Muslim faithful, he became the ruler of mali in 1312.when he assumed power he returned normalcy to the empire and expand the empire. He also made the empire known to the outside world when he embark on holy pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in 1324.The pilgrimage made Mali the preferred destination of Muslim scholars who contributed to the economic, social, and cultural development of the empire.

Sonni Ali : Sonni Ali became the king of Gao in 1464,when he became the ruler of Gao he laid a good foundation for songhai empire by uniting the warring states around Gao together. He also established a standing army and introduced conscription into the army to made the army more formidable to fight a war.he also brought more horses for his caravan. Sonni Ali was also known to have extended the frontiers of his empire, he also conquered and occupied many cities such as Timbuktu,Jenne,and kebbi in Hausaland in the present day Northern Nigeria.

Askia the Great: Askia the Great whose real name was Askia Mohammed Toure was the king of songhai empire from 1493 to 1528. He contributed to the growth of the empire by establishing a standing army, he also extended the songhai empire to the Atlantic in the west and to lake Chad in the east.he was also known to have made the administration of central government more efficient. He also embark on pilgrimage to Mecca which led to the economic, social and cultural development of the empire.
