The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was one of a number of large river basin development projects that were launched in the 1930s. Dams were built throughout the river system in order to control flooding and to generate power. There were similar projects for the  Columbia, Missouri and Colorado Rivers as well.  The generation of electricity helped to spur more industrial growth and commerce in the valley and the project helped with reforestation and the prevention of forest fires and promoted fertilizer development and erosion control that improved farming.
