I'm not sure about culture, but I know what affected Japanese art. The contribution of Zen to Japanese Art or culture is not so complex, but much of what the West admires in Japanese art today can be can be traced to zen influences of Buddhism in architecture, painting, poetry, gardening formations, and other crafts. but the things that are directly from Zen Buddhism is things painted/imprinted with the Japanese Dragon.
They were able to freely pick whatever life style/ beliefs as they pleased. In england you could only strictly be protestant for example, and a huge majority no longer wanted to abide by that. So, going to new england gave opportunity for those individuals to have independent beliefs without being judged and executed for those decisions ( This would happen in England btw) .
