The rain forest is very important for western medicine because about 25% of western pharmaceutical are derived from the rain forest. The rain forest has provided a wide variety of medicines like pain relievers and cure for various other diseases for the modern society.

Example: Quinine that cures malaria is an alkaloid that is extracted from the bark of cinchona tree that is known to be found in Latin America and Africa.
