The Clay compromise (1850) and the Missouri compromise (1820) attempted to lessen tension between the southern and northern states and to establish guidelines on slave labor in the country and the expansion of slavery. The intention of these two commitments was to make agreements that would benefit both states within their particularities, delaying tensions between them that would create separatist movements that would provoke a war that tried to separate the country, as was the war of secession.

Both agreements dealt with the slavery issue, but did not prohibit it throughout the national territory, nor did it even create an improvement in life and treatment for the black population, because, as it is worth mentioning, not even the southern states had the will to free the slaves and preferred leave southern states with the right to enslave, if that would prevent a major conflict.
