Dental problems and toothaches were also a problem. More serious illnesses and disease included small pox, cholera, venereal disease and pneumonia. The Corps of Discovery was flattering a “walking hospital” plagued with exhaustion, dysentery, skin diseases, constipation, malaria, fevers, boils, strained muscles, sore eyes, and venereal disease. That only one man died was luck indeed for Lewis and Clark.
