Pschological tests are often used to determine the hostility levels in people. High scores on the HLT pschological test correspo

nds to high hostility levels. Suppose that 26 college students, all with equally high HLT test scores, were separated into two groups randomly. Group 1 (10 students) was treated for high hostility levels by using Method A; whereas Group 2 (16 students) was treated for high hostility levels by using Method B. Both groups were treated for a period of 5 months, at which time all 26 students were again given the HLT test. Below is the summary data on the HLT test for the two groups.Group 1: sample mean is 79 and sample standard deviation is 7Group 2: sample mean is 84 and sample standard deviation is 8Compute a 95% confidence level for the difference in the means of the two treatment methods and select the best answer below. Assume that the independent random samples were taken from normal distributions and that the two population variances are equal.

Answer:  the correct answer is we are 95% confident that there is no statistically significant difference in the mean treatment  methods for hostility.

Step-by-step explanation:

1)  Test for the equality of variances in the two groups to choose the appropriate t-test.

H0: σ (1)^2 = σ (2)^2

Ha: σ (1)^2 ≠ σ (2)^2

Larger variance = 64

Smaller variance = 49

F = 1.30612

Degrees of freedom 15 and 9

Critical F from the table (with alpha=0.05) = 2.58

Calculated F is smaller than critical F, so we use the pooled variance t-test.

Sample 1 size 7

Sample 2 size 8

Sample 1 mean 79

Sample 2 mean 84

Sample 1 S.D. 7

Sample 2 S.D. 8

Pooled S.D = [(n1-1)s1^2+(n2-1)s2^2]/(n1+n2-2)

Pooled variance s = [(6)(49)+(7)(64))] / (13) =  (294+448)/13=742/13=57.076923

Pooled variance s^2 = 57.076923

Standard error of difference in means = sqrt(1/n1+1/n2) times sqrt(s^2)

Standard error of difference in means = (0.517549)(7.554927) = 3.910046 (denominator of t)

Confidence interval = (mean1-mean2) +/- t SE

t is the critical t with 24 degrees of freedom = 2.056

(79 - 84) +/- (2.056) (3.910046)

= (-13.04, 3.04)

Interval encloses 0

We are 95% confident that there is no statistically significant difference in the mean treatment  methods for hostility.

The number of events is 29, the number of trials is 298, the claimed population proportion is 0.10, and the significance leve
Nina [5.8K]

Answer:

z=\frac{0.0973 -0.1}{\sqrt{\frac{0.1(1-0.1)}{298}}}=-0.155

p_v =2*P(Z

And we can use excel to find the p value like this: "=2*NORM.DIST(-0.155;0;1;TRUE)"

So the p value obtained was a very high value and using the significance level given \alpha=0.05 we have p_v>\alpha so we can conclude that we have enough evidence to FAIL to reject the null hypothesis, and we can said that at 5% of significance the proportion of interest is not significantly different from 0.1 .

Step-by-step explanation:

1) Data given and notation

n=298 represent the random sample taken

X=29 represent the events claimed

\hat p=\frac{29}{298}=0.0973 estimated proportion

p_o=0.1 is the value that we want to test

\alpha=0.05 represent the significance level

Confidence=95% or 0.95

z would represent the statistic (variable of interest)

p_v represent the p value (variable of interest)

2) Concepts and formulas to use

We need to conduct a hypothesis in order to test the claim that the proportion is 0.1 or no.:

Null hypothesis:p=0.1

Alternative hypothesis:p \neq 0.1

When we conduct a proportion test we need to use the z statistic, and the is given by:

z=\frac{\hat p -p_o}{\sqrt{\frac{p_o (1-p_o)}{n}}} (1)

The One-Sample Proportion Test is used to assess whether a population proportion \hat p is significantly different from a hypothesized value p_o.

3) Calculate the statistic

Since we have all the info requires we can replace in formula (1) like this:

z=\frac{0.0973 -0.1}{\sqrt{\frac{0.1(1-0.1)}{298}}}=-0.155

4) Statistical decision

It's important to refresh the p value method or p value approach . "This method is about determining "likely" or "unlikely" by determining the probability assuming the null hypothesis were true of observing a more extreme test statistic in the direction of the alternative hypothesis than the one observed". Or in other words is just a method to have an statistical decision to fail to reject or reject the null hypothesis.

The next step would be calculate the p value for this test.

Since is a bilateral test the p value would be:

p_v =2*P(Z

We can do the test also in R with the following code:

> prop.test(29,298,p=0.1,alternative = c("two.sided"),conf.level = 1-0.05,correct = FALSE)

A cooler has 12 apple juices and 15 grape juices. 9 of the apple juices are sugar free and 5 of the grape juices are sugar free.
Romashka-Z-Leto [24]

Answer:

<em>The probability that it is grape juice, given that the juice is not sugar free is </em><em>0.769 or 76.9%</em>

Step-by-step explanation:

P(\text{Grape }|\text{ Not sugar free})=\dfrac{P(\text{Grape }\cap \text{ Not sugar free})}{P(\text{Not sugar free})}

A cooler has 12 apple juices and 15 grape juices. So total 27 juices are there.

Out of 12 apple juices, 9 of the apple juices are sugar free, so 3 are not sugar free.

Out of 15 grape juices, 5 of the grape juices are sugar free, so 10 are not sugar free. So,

P(\text{Grape }\cap \text{ Not sugar free})=\dfrac{10}{27}

P(\text{Not sugar free})=\dfrac{10+3}{27}=\dfrac{13}{27}

Putting the values,

P(\text{Grape }|\text{ Not sugar free})=\dfrac{P(\text{Grape }\cap \text{ Not sugar free})}{P(\text{Not sugar free})}=\dfrac{\frac{10}{27}}{\frac{13}{27}}=\dfrac{10}{13}=0.769
