By 1860, then, war was inevitable. Naturally, the conflict would at once present intricate military problems, and among them the

retention of the Pacific Coast was of the deepest concern to the Union. Situated at a distance of nearly two thousand miles from the Missouri River which was then the nation's western frontier, this intervening space comprised trackless plains, almost impenetrable ranges of snow-capped mountains, and parched alkali deserts. And besides these barriers of nature which lay between the West coast and the settled eastern half of the country, there were many fierce tribes of savages who were usually on the alert to oppose the movements of the white race through their dominions.
In this excerpt from "The Pony Express" chapter one, the physical description of the land between the Pacific Coast and the Missouri River tells the reader the area was

A. picturesque and lovely to see

B. dangerous and difficult to travel

C. interesting and fascinating to study

D. confusing and difficult to understand

Kay [80]

Answer:

The Old Socialist was getting a bit nosy

He was a mature man, very social and begifted with a natural curiosity for everything alive.

Explanation:

A connotation is a commonly understood word that in addition to the its literal meaning, carries an underlying emotional or cultural association. If we take for example the words old and mature we associate the latter in a positive way, because we imagine someone experienced in life instead of just being old. Social has a positive connotation too, but socialist doesn´t; the former is more human and the latter is political. Another example is nosy and curious: The latter can mean eager to know and learn; the former is somebody who is too curious - specially concerning personal details.

Read the excerpt below from the Yung Wing's book My life in China and America published in 1909.
pochemuha

The inference is that the sentence that best identifies the purpose of the excerpt is D. She seemed to take a special interest in me; I suppose, because I was young and helpless, and away from my parents, besides being the youngest pupil in the school.

What is an inference?

It should be noted that an inference simply means the conclusion that can be deduced based on the information given.

In this case, the narrator stated that her kindly expression and sympathetic smiles found little appreciative response at the outset, as I stood half dazed at her personality and my new environment.

Therefore, the inference is that the sentence that best identifies the purpose of the excerpt is that she seemed to take a special interest in me; I suppose, because I was young and helpless, and away from my parents, besides being the youngest pupil in the school.
