Five prominent examples of irony that builds tension in the story are:

  • Elizabeth wants Proctor to testify that the accusations are false, but she is unaware of his role in the situation.
  • Elizabeth gets mad at Proctor because he says he was alone in a room with Abigail. However, she does not know that the two were in fact having an affair.
  • When asked to say the Ten Commandments, Proctor forgets the one that forbids adultery. This is ironic as this is the commandment he violated.
  • Mary brags about the fact that she is keeping Elizabeth out of jail. However, Elizabeth is charged because of the doll that Mary gives her.
  • Even though Mary works for Proctor, and he is more powerful than her in every way, she is able to defy him by accusing him of lechery.

All of these examples tie to Miller's purpose for writing <em>The Crucible</em>. In these examples, we see that Miller wants to highlight the power that the girls were able to achieve in a community that does not respect them or takes them seriously. This leads to irony because it is a situation that neither the readers nor the characters were expecting. Moreover, Miller is able to show how the web of lies and deceit that the characters are weaving will eventually lead to tragedy for all of them.

1. B

The family that the author talks about believes that family should always be loyal to one another, and that one should be proud of being poor.

2. B

The author is critical of the family’s misplaced pride: he tells us about the “confused boy” who “grew up thinking one should be proud of being poor.”

3. B

“To the manor born” means coming naturally, as if from birth. So, perhaps it’s the dignity and respect for oneself that the family seems to have.

Read this excerpt from the Declaration of Independence. "We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature
ZanzabumX [31]

Answer:

The statement that best describes the colonists' view of their relationship with the British government is <em>A: The colonists have demanded fair treatment from the British government many times, and they believe separating from Britain is their last resort. </em>

Explanation:

What this excerpt from the Declaration of Independence exposses in these lines is that the colonists have tried many times to make the British government attend their needs as a society: "<em>We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here.</em>" It says that they feel they have been "<em>deaf</em>" to their needs, and, as a consequence, they have to separate from this government.
