A good way to explain why it is called the dark ages is for one the Roman Empire fell. After the fall of Rome people started to become unsanitary. With people being unsanitary the Bubonic Plague started in. he Plague was started by the bite of a simple flea, later on about 2/3 of Europe was wiped out. Tell the person tat disease had entered and many other terrible things to sum it up.

Since in a republic, you would have representatives for office and other positions, the person, like say a president, can abuse power to do bad things.
