The first world war was a consequence of the conflicts for economic expansion among European countries in the late nineteenth century. That model of economic development at its first moment became known as colonization. The period in which the Europe explored other regions outside of Europe searching for raw material that would be manufactured. Regions such as Africa and Asia became a target because they were a rich lands. At that moment colonization had already produced the biggest empires. The imperialism produced a huge conflict and disagreement among those nations.

The World War I killed nearly 13 million people and left 20 million wounded and maimed. The material losses were also enormous and roads, bridges, entire cities had to be rebuilt. It began a period of decline in Europe, with the social problems of unemployment, hunger, and misery. Europe had reconfigured itself as some empires crumble and new countries have emerged. The creation of the League of Nations in January 1919, based in Geneva, Switzerland, was inspired by the peace proposals of US President Woodrow Wilsoon. The aim was to get nations to diplomatically discuss their problems before going to war. The United States was the great winner of the conflict. They traded for more than three years with the Allies, did not see their territory invaded by enemies and still became creditors of European nations. Their industries would not suffer competition from Europe and their losses were few compared to those of European partners. For this reason, the country would follow its rise as a world power.

First - Give your opinion on whether being an effective critical thinker makes decision making easier or more challenging. Talk
likoan [24]

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

First. My opinion on whether being an effective critical thinker makes decision making easier or more challenging is the following.

I really think that critical thinking is a good way to make better decisions because critical thinking allows me to analyze a situation, to contemplate all its sides, project possible scenarios and consequences, use logic and reason and come up with the best decision possible.

For instance, when I had to make a decision about leaving school to help my family to make a living or stay school to continue with my classes and academic development. It was a tough decision but I never allow it to be an emotional one. I had to use critical thinking to analyze the situation.

Second. Yes, critical thinking concepts have helped me to become more successful in the decisions I make and in my personal life. The example I had share above is one good evidence of it. The key reasoning is that I am not used to following "hunches." I like to project scenarios and to evaluate consequences, because I know I have to live with the consequences of my decisions."

How did growing secularism influence European writers during the Renaissance?
enyata [817]

There was a main concern due the importance of rescuing the constant influence of the Church, either by spreading its power in the Middle Age or by showing in the history of thought, its subsequent deterioration from the Renaissance.

The long period designated with the overly generic name of Renaissance is the scene of a series of deep transformations that affect all aspects of culture in the social, political, economic, scientific, artistic, religious and literary fields. Besides the elements from the Middle Age, there are some new ones, whose result is an expansion of horizons and a profound transformation in the living conditions and way of thinking of the European villages.

The cultural process known as «Renaissance» is immediately subsequent to the Middle Age. Its main characteristics are: the exaltation of human being, the esteem of antiquity, individualism, heroic emotion, the appreciation of beauty and nature. With that said, the Renaissance is the period between the Middle Age and the Modern Age. That is to say, it appears as a culmination of the Middle Age and as a start of the Modern Age.

In the era of the so-called Renaissance, there was a desire for the renewal of the human spirit in all the fields. The philosophers of this time devoted their efforts, some to destroy the scholastic thought and others to look for the foundation of a new philosophy in which the human being and the reason occupied a very first place. The slogan was the return to the Greek and Latin spirit.

In the Renaissance, biographies of specific people appeared, with personal and individual characteristics. And, of course, the autobiography was born. As Montagine demonstrates: "I myself am the content of my book". With that said, in the Renaissance the importance is presented in the earthly glory, and not in a celestial level, throughout the desire of perpetuate.

During the years of the Middle Age, religion had guided all philosophical and scientific movement. The decadence of Scholasticism, led by an exaggerated verbalism, the influence of Arab thinkers and the naturalist interpretation of Aristotle, prepared the path of Renaissance science.

Modern philosophers resisted progressively to request the tutelage and the opinion of the leaders of the Church regarding their theses and speculations. An authentic struggle began to free itself from the dictation of theological dogma. Modern philosophers abandoned the rules held by indisputable universally accepted methods, to establish their own verification standards: rational coherence, empirical verification, methodical doubt, etc., breaking with the established dogmas.
