WILL MARK BRAINLIEST FOR CORRECT ANSWERFriends and fellow citizens: I stand before you tonight under indictment for the alleged

crime of having voted at the last presidential election, without having a lawful right to vote. It shall be my work this evening to prove to you that in thus doing, I not only committed no crime, but, instead, simply exercised my citizen's rights, guaranteed to me and all United States citizens by the National Constitution, beyond the power of any State to deny. Susan B. Anthony, "Speech After Being Convicted of Voting"
Which phrase most clearly explains the purpose of Susan B. Anthony's tone in this passage?
A. To allow her audience to get comfortable with the idea that a woman is speaking about such a controversial topic
B. To make sure she comes across as being informed on the issue at hand so that audiences hostile to her ideas will continue to listen
C. To provide a good role model for women in the audience who are secretly supporting her ideas about suffrage
D. To show that she is angry about being denied the right to vote and wants her audience to change the laws

D is the most reasonable way to look at what she is saying. She is angry. She has every right to be. She is, in all other ways, a citizen of the United States. She should have the right to vote. Women have earned that right, especially after WWI where they carried a very heavy load and took part in very important occupations during the war years.

The word alleged crime should give you a hint at what is going on. There is no mention of changing the laws directly in this passage, but what else could she want?

C is true, but it is not the point of her remarks in this speech.

She is doing much more than what A says. She's trying to make the women feel sympathy for her position and the men to feel uncomfortable. A is not the answer.

B
Sure she's informed, but again it's not the point. She is defending what she has done. She is not trying to win a debate.  She's trying to win a right.
