The authors' purpose can be to Persuade, inform or entertain. The author's point of view can be determined by asking yourself a few questions such as why did the author create the text. If the author's purpose is not obvious then one can ask himself how did the author's work make me feel. Your reaction to the text is a hint to the author's purpose.
