The motion of the convection currents in the mantle
Viefleur [7K]

Answer:

The Atlantic Ocean is becoming wider because of the motion of the convection currents in the mantle beneath it.

Explanation:

The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest ocean in the world. It is located between Eurasian and Africa on the east, North and South America on the west, the Arctic Ocean in the north, and the Southern Ocean on the south. This ocean has formed because of divergence between the continental masses that were once merge into one big landmass.

Along the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, stretching in a roughly north-south direction, there is a mid-ocean ridge. This is actually the place where the convection currents in the mantle beneath have caused the formation of divergent plate boundary which split the huge continental mass into smaller continents, and gradually, in the gap that has been opening, water entered and started to give rise to this ocean. The process is still going on, with the divergent plate boundary still being highly active, resulting in further pushing the continents away from each other, which in turn makes the Atlantic Ocean wider and wider.
