John Greenleaf Whittier was a  Quaker poet from America. He was the one who advocated the abolition of slavery in the U.S. William Lloyd Garrison published his first poem on 8th June 1826, which his sister sent to the Newburyport Free Press.

Garrison offered him the job of an editor. Over time, he became a serious critic of Andrew Jackson, the then president of the United States. It is believed that Whittier became associated with the abolitionist movement as a result of his work with William Lloyd Garrison.
