Consumers cannot perform photosynthesis.

Explanation:

The food chain is composed of two main components namely producers and consumers. The plants are kept under producers as they are involved in the production of food through a process called photosynthesis required by the other living organism.

The food which is produced by the plant is used by itself as well as by all other living creatures. Animal are called consumers because they cannot prepare their own food and are dependent on plant or producers as they cannot perform photosynthesis.
