What questions do SFF authors ask themselves when creating a futurescape, and what worldbuilding considerations do they make? Tor.com has assembled a roundtable of authors with exciting new books out this year to give you a look behind the scenes of their writing processes. We asked them several questions to start with, and then gave them control of the table to ask their own questions. Their replies are as varied as their work, and their worlds.

Participating today are Peng Shepherd (The Book of M), Malka Older (Infomocracy / The Centenal Cycle), Tade Thompson (Rosewater, The Murders of Molly Southbourne), Lauren C. Teffeau (Implanted), and Mike Chen (Here and Now and Then).

Fran Wilde: What is the most important thing to keep in mind when writing / worldbuilding in near future or distant technical future worlds?

Tade Thompson: To me, that would be using worldbuilding to ground the reader and characters in place, but to avoid piling it on in a fit of “isn’t this cool?” or “hey, wouldn’t it be great if…?”. The worldbuilding should serve the story and while I may know everything about the place/time/setting, I will only give the reader enough to be able to follow the story and extrapolate. I’m not a fan of showy worldbuilding. You know how in some game engines the 3D world is rendered just before the player character arrives, and it decides just how much to render? That’s sometimes what I feel worldbuilding should be like. The grounding should, of course, let us know how this future world deviates from ours.

I’d like to add here that a recent example of excellent worldbuilding (in my view) is The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. The balance is perfect.

Mike Chen: I think the most important thing is that the world needs rules established, and then the worldbuilding has to follow those rules. It’s okay to have fantastical elements as long as they don’t do anything to contradict something that’s previously established—any conflict or contradiction will cause the reader to pause and go “Wait, I thought they couldn’t do that?” and that’s gonna at best create confusion, at worst lose the reader and cause them to rage quit the book.

Also, the rules should be established organically and not in a giant info dump!

Lauren C. Teffeau: For me, it’s finding the right entry point into a story world. In those crucial opening scenes you’re not only establishing the rules, but you’re also setting up the reader’s expectations just by virtue of it being their first glimpse of your world, now destined to color everything that comes after. When deciding how to open a story, I try to create scenes that not only introduce my main character in an engaging way and portray some driving action approaching a plot, but also introduce at least two or more aspects of my world that help ground the reader in the story (good) and hint at cool or intriguing aspects to come (better). Getting the reader oriented so they’ll tag along for the whole ride is best of all.

“A field trip to Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon”

First of all I would like to mention that Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon is one of the most colorful and wonderful places, a person could ever see in during the whole life. The formal name of this place is Providence Canyon, which is situated in southwest Georgia’s Coastal Plains region near the Alabama border. In 1800s poor farmers started growing plants and cut down the trees, as a result, their activity caused the soil erosion. Because of that and some natural factors such as rain and years of the flow of water and sand , helped to create an amazing, picturesque  place which includes 43 different colors of sand and soil. It is a well-known fact, that in 1971, the state of Georgia decided to officially name it a state park instead. Providence Canyon State Park is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Georgia.

Activities and accommodation:

1. In July and August, the canyon floor is decorated with the world’s largest known colony of the rare plumleaf azalea. This beautiful paprika-red flower is found only in southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama.

2.  Along the trails, you’ll also likely see woodpeckers, wild turkeys, warblers, white-tailed deer, armadillos, raccoons, red foxes, and gray squirrels. The trails are clearly marked; or if you prefer, a park ranger can take you on a guided tour”( Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon Jayce Blackman)

3. This park has got trails to hike and one of the most popular is called Canyon Loop Trail, it takes about 2 hours to hike. If a visitor wants to explore more, you can get extra time and explore a historic church and cemetery, which was built in 1800s.

4. There are three pioneer or six background campsites.  The Pioneer camps are private ones and it is allowed to make a reservation for groups. It’s an ideal place for students or adult people.  Besides there is water, grills, toilets and everything that you may need. Background sites are undeveloped and the students should take everything they may need, including water. Of course it’s up to you to decide, where you would like to stay, or being a savage or tourist. . In addition, the park also hosts "Geology Days", with a ranger-led tour of the canyons and their geological history. Besides there is no light pollution and you can enjoy an amazing view of the night sky.

The Prices for accommodation and address are listed here:

It costs $5 to park at Providence Canyon State Park, and annual passes are available for $50. If you're 62 or older, you can get the annual Park Pass at a 50 percent discount, and active military and veterans with a valid ID can get 25 percent off.

The park is open from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. from Sept. 15-April 14 and from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. from April 15-Sept. 14. The visitor's center is generally open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Picnic shelters cost $35 to rent, pioneer campsites are $40 to $80 and accommodate 50 people per site, and backcountry campsites can be reserved for $10 a person.

The address is 8930 Canyon Road, Lumpkin, GA 31815. It’s in Stewart County. GPS Coordinates for Providence Canyon are N 32.064445 | W -84.921913 (Everything to know about Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon «Eliza Sheffield)

So, do not loose this opportunity! This lovely and amazing place gives you an opportunity of taking pictures, camping, having a picnic, attending one of the site's occasional astronomy nights and going sightseeing. Besides you can go hiking, have a picnic, become closer to nature and see with your own eyes amazing animals that live in the park. You can take pictures and enjoy the view of the rare plumleaf azalea, if you decide to visit this park in July or August. It`s a perfect place for students with different kinds of activities. Each person would like to have a picture with 43 different natural colored background. There is a great variety of camping with cheap price. The Seventh Wonder of Georgia is waiting for you! Touch the legend and imprint in your memory!
