The main cause of the armed conflict between Great Britain and China was related to the trade of Opium. China tried several times to stop illegal commercialization of the drug by foreign traders, among which the British played a key role.

It was positive, because the West had been critical of the war in Afghanistan and could only be satisfied once it was over.
