He believed that states were having their rights attacked and reduced by the federal government and supported nullification, which was the idea that a state should have the right to ignore federal policies if they didn't agree with them, if they considered the policies to be unconstitutional. He supported slavery and wanted South Carolina to decide things for themselves.
