Chief Joseph was the one of the leaders of a tribe of native Americans called the Nez Perce.

The Nez Perce tribe were being forced to relinquish their native lands in the North West and settle in an improvised Indian settlement in Idaho. This was a violation of an earlier agreed treaty (known as the Treaty of Walla Walla), which allowed the Nez Perce to fish and graze on about 7.5 million acres of ancestral land in the North West ceded by the government

Chief Joseph opposed this violation and lead this tribe to war against the United States army which is led by brigadier General Oliver Howard at the time.

The war only lasted about four months (from June to October 1877) before Chief Joseph's capture and subsequent surrender
