Why I chose this poem: I think that Shel,is a very talented author. Shel is very funny and smart. He makes up poems that people can relate to.

Answer: I believe that the title, "The Great Gatsby" holds a much deeper meaning and message than most people infer from it. To explain, most people would typically read the title and infer from it "Oh, from the title this must mean that Gatsby was great!" but upon further analysis the term "great" allucidates to a much deeper message that I believe could be that during this time period, the public image of Gatsby was considered to be the image of coolness, elitism, etc. yet the personality and being of Gatsby character himself proves to be far from the perfect idealized man he was portrayed to be.

The purpose can usually be seen in the first sentence or paragraph (unless you have an excerpt). Though it may not be too specific it will usually be backed up by evidence later in the passage. A purpose can always be proven by text details.
Choice of details: should support the purpose
organization: Some things are good for some purposes.
e.g. cause effect, shows the good or bad effects of a purpose. The author can support the purpose or no.
chronological can show how something has changed over time.
etc.
Try to identify the main structure and how the passage is organized and how it supports the main idea.
