The AFL was a union for skilled workers and tradesmen.
The CIO fought for including unskilled workers under labor union protections.

The American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) merged into a single organization in 1955, commonly referred to as the AFL-CIO. The two movements strengthened one another by coming together to fight for workers generally.

The Congress of industrial organizations fought for unskilled workers under labor union protections.

The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of industrial organizations worked for both the unskilled and skilled labor in industrial unions in the United States and Canada from 1935 to 1955. The Congress of Industrial organizations brought together the unskilled workers and placed them under the leadership of John L Lewis. The difference in opinion within the members of the American Federation League, on whether union organization should be based on skill or industry, led to the breaking away of representatives of eight unions, and they formed the Congress for industrial organizations two years later.

Further Explanation:

The American Federation of Labor believed in the concept of craft unionism, and almost all member unions retained complete autonomy over the jurisdiction of their affairs. The Federation was concerned unlikely with local industrial issues, which meant that it did not organize workers on a national scale. It propagated for issues such as better wages, benefits, fixed working hours and proper working conditions for workers. The growth of the labor movement was observed in the 1920s with the passage of the Wagner Act, preventing employers from interfering with the activities of labor unions. However, a group of members within the Federation propagated that the industrial organization of workers was the only possible solution for organizing the welfare of workers on a national scale. The Federation suspended the membership of these unions, as it was opposed to organizing industrial labor, which they termed to be unskilled. The Congress for Industrial Organizations was established in November 1935, organizing workers of heavy industries such as mining, steel, rubber and automobile industries.

Do you think the Embargo Act was a smart idea? Why or why not?
galina1969 [7]

here you go

The diplomatic neutrality of the United States was tested during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). The warring nations of Britain and France both imposed trade restrictions in order to weaken each other's economies. These restrictions also disrupted American trade and threatened American neutrality. As time went on, British harassment of American ships increased. Controversial measures included British impressment of American men and seizure of American goods. After the Chesapeake Affair in June 1807, pitting the British warship Leopard against the American frigate Chesapeake, President Thomas Jefferson faced a decision regarding the situation at hand. Ultimately, he chose an economic option to assert American rights: The Embargo Act of 1807.

Impressment

Although not restricted to the presidential administrations of Jefferson and James Madison, the on-going impressment of American sailors became a key issue for the United States during the Napoleonic Wars. After witnessing the horrors of war with France, many British sailors deserted His Majesty's navy and enlisted in the American merchant marines. In order to retrieve the deserters, British "press gangs" came aboard American ships. The British, however, tended to take anyone who could pass as a British soldier – unless the sailor could prove his American citizenship. Approximately 1,000, out of the estimated 10,000 men taken from American ships, were proven to have British citizenship.1

James Madison had summed up the contrasting points of view in an 1804 letter to James Monroe:
