There was a rumor that the cartridges that several sepoy companies were using were made from cow and pig fat. In order to load the Enfield rifle the sepoys had to open the cartridge with their teeth with the risk of being in contact with the fat. It was considered an insult for Hindu and Muslim religious practices because cows were considered holy by Hindus and Muslims considered pigs as unclean.
