In 1968, television viewers watched police in Chicago beat demonstrators protesting against the Democratic Party’s nomination of Hubert Humphrey for president.
We are referring to an incident during the Democratic Convention of 1968 in Chicago, Illinois. Democrat delegates were inside the International Amphitheater of the city when protesters arrived at the facility and started their protest in the streets. They opposed the Vietnam War. The Chicago Police Department had to intervene and arrested many protested. Several policemen and protesters were hurt during the incident.
Democrats favored expansion in order to increase their power in Congress and expand slavery; Whigs opposed expansion because they feared losing power in Congress.
