Hi! I'm having trouble with my algebra homework. The second question (b) confused me, I don't understand what they are asking or

what to do. Can you please help me? Thanks!
question:

You are looking to carpet your bedroom. The area of your rectangular bedroom is given by the expression A=10x^2-50x.

a. What is the GCF of the binomial?

(I'm pretty sure the answer is 10 you don't have to help me with this.)

b. If the length of your bedroom is "five times x", what is the width?

(This is what is confusing me, please help.)

c. If the length of your bedroom is the GCF in part (a), what is the width?

A

Don't forget that you can also pull out an x besides the 10. The expression should look like this.

A(x) = 10x(x - 5)

The GCF is 10x

B

The area of the Bedroom = 10x ( x - 5)

If the length = 5x then the width is

A/L = 10x (x - 5)/(5x)= 2*(x - 5)

C

Now they are changing the Length to the GCF. We determined in A that the GCF = 10x

This time A/L = 10x(x - 5)/10x = (x - 5)

So the width = x - 5

The nominal return on an investment doesn't consider the effect of inflation on purchasing power. If the inflation rate is positive, then the real return will be less than the nominal return on an investment.

Positive inflation eats away at the value of the dollar. For instance, an item worth $100 one year could be worth $105 the next year if inflation was 5%. Therefore, you've lost 5 dollars worth of purchasing power (since you need 5 extra dollars to get the same item).

The formula is

real return = nominal return - inflation

If inflation is positive, then the real return is smaller than the nominal return.

If inflation is negative (ie we have deflation), then the real return is larger than the nominal return.
