Until the creation of amendment that create a separation between states and church in 1791, the church had a really huge influence in united states government. This is why there are a couple of reference to God and religion in both these document.

During that era, there were concerns that anti-Semitism was on the rise and this led prominent Christian leaders, Catholics, Protestants, across the country to put in place some measures that helped to increase tolerance and understanding among Americans.
