During the first half of the 1790s, the new American government faced several challenges. In 1791, an armed protest called the Whiskey Rebellion involved violent attacks on government officials and destruction of property. Although President Washington signed treaties with the Native Americans, fighting broke out between certain groups and settlers in the west. General Anthony Wayne, who had fought in the Revolutionary War, gained a decisive victory over Native Americans in 1794 at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. As a result, the United States acquired most of the land in present-day Ohio in the Treaty of Greenville signed in 1795. This marked a turning point in Indian Affairs as the US government had now gained significant control over the lives of Native Americans.
