During the war, forces of the army were made of men, so women back home had to take over responsibilities and duties previously attributed to men.

After the war was over, the work women did proved they were able to help and have responsibilities not only at home. It ultimately helped them with suffrage.

But apparently, in many sources, it states that German-Americans in both Germany and US, were imprisoned. Sad truth :(
