Different areas of a newspaper have different purposes. The obituaries, for instance, have the goal of letting the local community know about someone's death.
The areas that would present opinions about issues in a community would be the editorials, the columns, and the letters to the editor. These areas have the purpose of expressing someone's point of view concerning certain subjects:
An editorial is an article written by an editor expressing the newspaper's opinion or written by someone who does not work directly for that paper and, in that case, it may present a disclaimer saying the opinion does not represent the newspaper's.
A column is a recurrent article in which the writer may express their opinion in a specific number of columns alloted to them by the newspaper.
Finally, a letter to the editor is written by the readers concerning a subject they feel strongly about.
