In June 11, 1963 President John F. Kennedy from his room in the oval office delivered a speech on civil rights which was transmitted on radio and television to the American people. The main purpose of the speech was to let the nation know that he wanted to propose legislation on civil rights.
In 1964, President Kennedy´s proposal became The Civil Rights Act. During this time, the civil rights movement has been going on for several years and the entire country was aware of the events happening at the time.
President Kennedy was extremely careful at the beginning to give full support to African Americans who wanted racial equality for every citizen in the county and desegregation. He was afraid that legislators in the South which was very segregated could be alienated.
Finally, after very detailed consultations President Kennedy decided that the pursue of racial equality, and desegregation was a moral and just cause, which himself and his administration would give full support.
