The process occurs this way

  1. Prevailing winds carry air toward the mountain range.
  2. As the air rises up over a mountain range, the air cools, water vapor condenses, and clouds form. The windward side of a mountain range is moist and lush because of this precipitation.
  3. Once the air passes over the mountain range, it moves down the other side, warms, and dries out.
  4. This dry air produces a rain shadow. Land in a rain shadow is typically very dry.

So, to identify the steps in the rain shadow process on the image:

a. Prevailing winds

b. Air cooling and condensing.

c. Warm, moist air rising.
