The Republican "hawks" wanted total war in Vietnam. War hawks are people who favor war in a debate and total war is when all of the resources are put towards winning the war. Martin Luther King Jr. was very unsure of the total war aspect in Vietnam because he was worried it would take away all of the resources from social reform.
