What sank the novel in 1925 is the source of its success today. "The Great Gatsby" challenges the myth of the American Dream, glowing like the green light on Daisy's dock in the Roaring '20s: <span>"It eluded us then, but that's no matter -- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther ... And one fine morning" lose the Dream in the social upheavals, violence and unpleasant realities of the decades after the 1950s. The novel anticipates the disillusionment and emptiness found in the standard version of the Dream that became prevalent, if not accepted, in a later era. </span><span>In the character of Jay Gatsby, Fitzgerald caught the contradictions of romantic illusion in the heartless, cynical modern society that tolerated criminals like Gatsby as long as they picked up the check. He's the attractive, flawed hero, an early Tony Soprano, whose death seems a tragedy but is the consequence of his old-fashioned chivalrous gesture to save his princess. </span><span>He's quickly forgotten. No one attends his funeral, and the world of East Egg -- the true American aristocracy -- moves on</span>

explain the key differences in the views of Hobbes and Locke on the social contract. Write two to three sentences that identify
3241004551 [841]
Thomas Hobbes came up with the idea of the social contract in 1657. His ideas were influenced by the English Civil War. He argued the importance of government, saying that society would be in ruins without it. Because of his pessimistic view of people, believing we are all born naturally evil and corrupt, he believed that absolute rule was the only answer. He wanted to form a social contract with the government primarily because he wanted to ensure self-interest. John Locke built off of Hobbes ideas but changed them to fit his own ideals. He wanted the power of government to come from the people's consent, keeping the rulers accountable to their people, yet in power.

Hope that helps!

Which feature of Anglo-Saxon culture is described in the excerpt?
nika2105 [10]
If the passage you're talking about is this:

<span>"So the Helming woman went on her rounds,
queenly and dignified, decked out in rings,
offering the goblet to all ranks,
treating the household and the assembled troop
until it was Beowulf’s turn to take it from her hand."

Then the correct answer is C. a gift-giving.

Before going into a fight, the warriors honour each other with gifts. This was a common Anglo-Saxon ritual of great significance. It meant that the people who are honouring each other are a community in which they treat each other with respect, fight side by side, and pledge to keep each other safe in the battles to come.</span>
