Answer:

The Massasoit’s decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on the following events:

  • The natives were suffering from the plague and other deadly diseases brought by the Europeans from their homeland. This had resulted in the declining strength and population of the native people in the nation.
  • Massasoit was aware of the size and power of the English society. Thus he was in the favor of growing an alliance with them.

Explanation:

Massasoit had decided to visit Plymouth and arrive upon an agreement with Pilgrims. The Massasoit is believed to have been influenced to agree in Plymouth because he was aware of the deteriorating power of the Indians and rising powers of English.

Further explanation:

The agreement between the Wampanoag chieftain and Pilgrims was monumental in the sense that it was aimed at bringing peace and cooperation between the two communities. The Massasoit’s decision to go to Plymouth was against the backdrop of the declining population of the Indians as a result of the diseases brought by Europeans. He was further aware of the rising power of Pilgrims and thus he decided to bring peace between the two communities to avoid all sorts of conflict and tension between them.

The Pilgrims had arrived to Massachusetts in 1620  as English settlers who were seeking to leave England to bypass the authority of Church. The Pilgrims went on further explore Plymouth where the first contact between the Pilgrims and Wampanoag happened. The treaty was instrumental in the sense that it secured peace between Wampanoag and Pilgrims by containing any kind of violence against each other.

In 1621, there was a treaty between the Wampanoag Chieftain and the Plymouth Pilgrims. With the signature of both sides regarding this treaty, they were really committed to a mutual defense alliance in order to face their common enemies. And in that same year, there was the first Thanksgiving celebration.
