The 2000 presidential election was extremely tight. When the votes had been counted, the democratic side demanded a recount in Florida. This election was quite unique because the recount lasted much longer than expected. This forced the Supreme Court to take a stand, and the court eventually decided that the Florida votes went to George W. Bush.
