They may place a sterility indicator with special dye to detect the growth of endospores.

Explanation:

A sterility indicator should be placed inside and in the center of  the item that will be autoclaved, if the indicator changes colors that means that the endospores were not killed with the sterilization process and the bacteria survived the high temperatures of the autoclave.
