What is reinforcement?
A belief or habit of behavior is encouraged or established through the process of reinforcement. In this instance, the manager commended his hourly workers for a job well done. The employer hopes that the employees' hard work will be rewarded with the compliments. The boss's praise serves as the reinforcement in this instance. The employer believed that the compliments would motivate the staff to put in more effort.
Punishment results in a behaviour being decreased, whereas reinforcement results in an increase in the behaviour. Punishment can be used in a positive or bad way, much like reinforcement. The likelihood of a behavioural response is increased by all reinforcers, positive or negative.
