it's important for our math to make sense. If our number sense disagrees with the answer, either the answer or our sense has to be fixed. If we leave them both as they are, we'll be in trouble. In this case, what seems natural and obvious when we're used to working with whole numbers has to be modified when we introduce fractions.

Let's think about why dividing by a whole number produces a smaller result. Dividing 24 by 4 means I want to find out how many 4's it takes to make 24. If I have 24 sticks

||||||||||||||||||||||||

24

I can divide 24 by 4 by counting out 6 groups of 4 sticks:

|||| |||| |||| |||| |||| ||||

1 2 3 4 5 6

Since each group contains more than one stick, there are fewer groups than sticks.

Now let's divide 6 by 1/4. That means I want to find out how many 1/4's it takes to make 6. If I have 6 sticks

||||||

6

and I break each of them into 4 pieces:

|||| |||| |||| |||| |||| ||||

1 2 3 4 5 6

I find that there are 24 quarter-sticks. Since each stick has been turned into 4 pieces, there are more pieces than sticks - the result of the division is greater than the original number of sticks. (By the way, this also helps to explain why dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal.)

You're exactly right that when you divide by a number less than one, things turn upside down, and the quotient is now larger than the dividend. In fact, you're multiplying by the reciprocal, which is a number greater than one, and you therefore increase the number.

Similarly, multiplying by a number greater than one increases a number, and multiplying by a number less than one decreases it:

24 / 4 = 6 smaller 6 * 4 = 24 bigger

6 / 1/4 = 24 bigger 24 * 1/4 = 6 smaller

Answer:

1. 15 (A)

2. 12 (G)

Step-by-step explanation:

1.  We can make an equation out of this...

    3x+3=48

    x is the age of Geoff which is what we are trying to find out

    We have to add 3 to both sides of the equation

    3x+3=48

         -3   -3

     ________

    we end up with 3x=45

     we then have to divide 3 by both sides because its the opposite of

     multipling

    3x=45

    _____

         3

    we get x=15

2.   We can write a problem statement

      (2 x 9)-6=?

       multiply 2 and 9 <u>FIRST</u>

       18-6=?

       your answer is 12

      Your Welcome! Have a great rest of your day! :)

Find the error and explain why:
Sloan [31]

1)  9x + 2 = x + 5  ---> 9x + 2 = 6

subtracted X from one side but not the other

2) 3(x-4) + 5 = 12  ---> 3x + 4 + 5 = 12

didn't distribute correctly: 3(x-4)

multiplied the X by 3 but not the -4

Meg plotted the graph below to show the relationship between the temperature of her city and the number of sweaters sold at a st
Sav [38]

The explanation about the graph is illustrated below.

<h3>How to illustrate the graph?</h3>

The graph shows 0 to 30 on the x-axis at increments of 5 and 0 to 12 on the y-axis at increments of 1. The label on the x-axis is Temperature in degrees C, and the label on the y axis is the Number of Sweaters Sold.

If you will draw lines through, (12.5,6) and (15,4), it will best represent a line of best fit, because most of the points on the same and opposite sides of line are equidistant from each other.

Equation of line passing through (12.5,6) and (15,4) A line of best is the line that passes through all or some points or only through a single point, which describes the relationship between x and y values of data set

4x + 5y = 80

5y = -4x + 80.

y = -4x/5 + 16

Slope = -4/5 and y intercept is 16.
