Hughes uses figurative language to develop theme by detailing to the reader the importance of the setting/ by also giving the characters life so that the theme is also seen from the characters he creates. This goes too show as the story developed Hughes language is a way of giving clues and foreshadowing what will happen or giving metaphors to explain complex ideas to the readers.
