This was Roosevelt's first reaction to Sinclair's book <em>The Jungle</em>. Sinclair wrote about a group of immigrants who worked in the meat-packing industry. The book portrayed extremely harsh work conditions, cruel bosses and difficult lives. However, it also discussed the problems of the meat-packing industry, which included extremely unsanitary conditions. Upon reading the novel, Roosevelt's expressed disbelief and distrust. However, the book did motivate the government to ensure better overview of the sanitation of these packing facilities.
