Answer:

Step 1. A carboxyl group is removed from pyruvate, releasing a molecule of carbon dioxide into the surrounding medium. (Note: carbon dioxide is one carbon attached to two oxygen atoms and is one of the major end products of cellular respiration. ) The result of this step is a two-carbon hydroxyethyl group bound to the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase; the lost carbon dioxide is the first of the six carbons from the original glucose molecule to be removed. This step proceeds twice for every molecule of glucose metabolized (remember: there are two pyruvate molecules produced at the end of glycolysis); thus, two of the six carbons will have been removed at the end of both of these steps.

Step 2. The hydroxyethyl group is oxidized to an acetyl group, and the electrons are picked up by NAD+, forming NADH (the reduced form of NAD+). The high- energy electrons from NADH will be used later by the cell to generate ATP for energy.

Step 3. The enzyme-bound acetyl group is transferred to CoA, producing a molecule of acetyl CoA. This molecule of acetyl CoA is then further converted to be used in the next pathway of metabolism, the citric acid cycle.

An early consequence of the release of oxygen gas by plant and bacterial photosynthesis was to _____. a. cause iron in ocean wat
Virty [35]

Answer:

Option (A)

Explanation:

In the primitive world, about 3 billion years back, there has been a sudden increase in the amount of oxygen gas in the atmosphere, and this was possible by the plants and other bacteria that carried out the process of photosynthesis.

The increasing amount of oxygen gas resulted in the formation of iron in the ocean water, where some of the available oxygen reacted with the dissolved iron and gave rise to the insoluble iron oxide. These insoluble iron oxide then sank into the bottom of the sea floor and over a due course of time, it gave rise to the formation of the banded-ironstone formation rocks (BIFs).

The rocks in the terrestrial environment also reacted with the oxygen and after the process of oxidation, rusting of rocks took place.

Thus, the correct answer is option (A).

A scientist does a study in which she manipulates the presence of a microbe that lives in plant roots. When a particular microbe
mixas84 [53]

Answer: No

Explanation:

Mutualism is a kind of symbiotic relationship when two species lives in close association with each other to complete their life cycle. In this relationship both the species receives the benefit of association.

The given situation is not an example of mutualism this is because of the fact that in the association with the microbes the plants are more fit but the situation does not describe the fact that the microbe is also getting any benefit of association.

Which best describes the purpose of bar graphs?
Svetlanka [38]

The right answer is They compare quantities for particular categories.

The bar graph is composed of horizontal bands. The categories are presented on the ordinate (Y axis - vertical). The length of each bar is measured by the values arranged on the abscissa (X axis - horizontal).

It draws attention to the comparison of values rather than a period followed by time (as in the case of the bar chart).
